A small town in south-central New Mexico, Ruidoso sits at the crux of the Sierra Blanca and Sacramento mountain ranges. Marvelous alpine scenery and the potential for outdoor adventure have made Ruidoso a rapidly growing resort community in recent years. Ruidoso strives to be known for quaint cabins along the Rio Ruidoso River and outdoor activity, such as its famous mountain biking trails, including the nationally recognized Rim Trail which features 17 miles of beautiful vistas including White Sands National monument in the valley below. Perhaps this rugged identity traces back at least in part to New Mexico’s most famous inhabitant, Billy the Kid. For those interested in American history, Ruidoso is the centrally located to many historic points of interest that recall the life and legend of Henry McCarty, Billy Bonney, or ‘Billy the Kid’ as he is most frequently known after his role Lincoln County War. Despite its rugged exterior, however, Ruidoso is not without amenities. There are a full range dining and restaurant options, all the accommodations of local ski resorts, and a bit of other-worldly fun as well. For those extra-terrestrially minded visitors, don’t forget, Ruidoso is close to Roswell, New Mexico, the celebrated home of ‘The Roswell Incident’ and the largest annual UFO Festival in North America, which attracts quite a collection of curious observers every year in July.
